Metopic Suture Synostosis: Endoscopic Approach, Key Points for the Neurosurgeons

Metopic synostosis is a type of craniosynostosis characterized by a unique head shape called trigonocephaly. This condition has traditionally been treated with open repair, a relatively large procedure which frequently associated with blood transfusion and a several day hospital length of stay (LOS). More recently, endoscope-assisted repair of metopic synostosis has shown its relevance as an alternative option with a lower rate of transfusion, short hospital LOS, and comparable cosmetic outcome. In our institution, an endoscopic approach to synostosis was introduced in 2004 and twenty years of data have shown it is an excellent alternative to open surgery regarding both safety and outcome. In this chapter, we described the procedural details of endoscopic release of the metopic suture and the typical postoperative course and outcomes.
