Sagittal Suture Synostosis: Open Vault Surgery in Young Children, Key Points for Neurosurgeons

Sagittal synostosis is the most commonly diagnosed form of craniosynostosis in pediatric patients. In the setting of a clear cosmetic deformity that also has the potential to restrict brain growth and lead to neurocognitive delays, surgical intervention is warranted for treatment. Multiple surgical strategies for managing sagittal synostosis include both endoscopic and open techniques. In this chapter, the authors discuss options for open vault surgery, including the diagnosis, preoperative considerations, operative techniques, postoperative care, complication avoidance, and long-term outcomes. Pearls and pitfalls are highlighted to enhance patient care and management.
