The Role of a Psychologist on a Craniosynostosis Team
摘要
Individuals born with craniosynostosis are best treated by a multidisciplinary craniofacial team. A pediatric psychologist is an important member of that team. Individuals with craniosynostosis are at increased risk for problems related to psychological adjustment, social competence, and neurocognitive development. A pediatric psychologist works with other team members to provide family support and education that is culturally sensitive and responsive to family need. The pediatric psychologist also assesses child social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment, screens for neurocognitive delays, and ensures the neuropsychological assessments are administered when indicated. Finally, a pediatric psychologist who specializes in craniofacial psychology is involved in research that further delineates etiology of social, emotional, and behavioral challenges; provides a clearer understanding of the neurodevelopmental implications of the many different craniosynostosis diagnoses; and investigates the impact of medical treatments on psychological well-being and neurodevelopment.
