Ventricular and Pericerebral Cerebrospinal Fluid Accumulation in Craniosynostosis

Though hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure are a common feature of complex craniosynostoses, various alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics can also be found, when searched for, in a significant proportion of single suture synostosis. Indeed, some degree of ventricular dilation and/or localized pericerebral effusion can be observed in some cases of scaphocephaly, trigonocephaly, and plagiocephaly. Both the ventricular dilation and the focal collection of CSF in the subarachnoid spaces may impact in part on the skull morphology and post-operative outcome. However, their functional and clinical significance remains to be elucidated.
