Entrepreneurial Women in Southern Sinaloa. Female’s Work and Its Challenges

Traditionally, productive economic activities have been allocated to men whereas care and domestic ones have been attributed to women. Due to the gradual change in gender roles, women have overcome structural limitations and incorporated themselves into the labor market. In this context, the objective of this research is to analyze women’s participation in the process of entrepreneurship in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, Mexico, which is done by identifying the motivations and the challenges they face. A theoretical approach is made from a gender perspective, employing a qualitative methodology, with an exploratory scope and micro-social nature, and in-depth interviews. As a result, it is found that the main motivation has been unemployment and the Covid-19 pandemic, while the main challenges are related to the gender gap issued from social and cultural barriers. This illustrates a latent problem in society product of the lack of gender perspective in business development studies.
