Modern Synthesis (1): The Contributions of Fisher

  • Prakash Gorroochurn

摘要

FisherFisher, Ronald Aylmer was the first of the founding fathers of the modern synthesismodern synthesis. The two tenets of his evolutionary work were that natural selectionselectionnatural acted slowly on populations that were large and panmictic, and that the effects of natural selectionselectionnatural could be gauged by focusing on individual genes. In 1918, FisherFisher, Ronald Aylmer wrote a fundamental paper on biometrical (quantitative) genetics. His 1922 paper introduced the concepts of balancing selection and diffusion equationsdiffusion equation. It also investigated equilibria under different evolutionary scenarios. FisherFisher, Ronald Aylmer first clashed with WrightWright, Sewall inWright, Sewall 1928 on the issue of the evolution of dominance. One of Fisher’sFisher, Ronald Aylmer most controversial contributions to evolutionary genetics is the fundamental theorem of natural selectionselectionnatural, which he first enunciated in 1930.
