Big Data Technologies Foundation: Definition, Reference Architecture, Use Cases

This chapter starts with the definition of Big Data and Data Intensive Technologies and the analysis of the challenges Big Data brings to modern Information Technologies (IT). We will discuss the Big Data properties: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Variability, Value, and Veracity, often called Big Data 3V or 6V. We will also discuss the main components of the Big Data ecosystem where data play a driving role. The chapter will discuss Big Data use cases from research and industry, that demonstrate how particular Big Data challenges are solved by Big Data technologies. The pesented Big Data Architecture Framework is defined in compliance with the NIST Big Data Architecture, reference to Big Data Infrastructure requirements according to NIST is provided in the appendix to this chapter.
