An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Applications in Power Systems

In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) refers to creating machines and systems that can perform tasks normally performed by humans. AI has many applications in various fields, including medicine, education, finance, and entertainment. One emerging and challenging field that can benefit from AI is power systems, which are complex networks of generation, transmission, distribution, and electricity consumption. Power systems face many issues, such as increasing demand, environmental constraints, renewable integration, reliability, security, and efficiency. AI can solve these issues effectively by using techniques such as optimization, machine learning (ML), data mining, expert systems, fuzzy logic, and neural networks. This chapter introduces AI’s basic concepts, principles, and applications in power systems. It covers topics such as load forecasting, fault diagnosis, demand response, and smart grid. This chapter also discusses the advantages, challenges, and future directions of AI in power systems.
