Understanding the biology of the spine and the conditions to optimize obtaining a spinal fusion are essential to the spine surgeon. Knowledge of surgical anatomy of the spine and mastery of the different possible approaches will keep the surgeon safe. These have become much more relevant at a time where constant development of new techniques calls for the surgeon to be a lifelong learner.
