The Tauchnitz Edition and Other Tauchnitz Paperback Series: Survey and Statistics

This chapter deals with the English-language paperback series published by Bernhard Tauchnitz Verlag. It places the Collection of British and American Authors at the centre of the analysis. The book series is presented in an overview with its special characteristics and features. The so-called Memorial Volumes are given a separate section, as they stand out from the other volumes of the series in terms of content and legal aspects. In addition, the author provides the first statistical analysis of the collection, taking into account new questions such as the extent to which women authors were involved in the Tauchnitz Edition or what can be said about the national origins of the authors. Other English-language paperback series published by Tauchnitz Verlag between 1860 and 1920 are presented, and differences and similarities to the company’s flagship are discussed.
