Acknowledging a Shared Destiny

Acknowledging a Shared Destiny is composed of four subsections that shed light on collectivistic worldviews and processes that support growth-fostering relationships within teams. The first subsection, Relationships within the Coaching Staff, explores coaches’ bonds with one another and ways in which cohesion at this level impacts overall team cohesion. The second subsection, Relationships with Players, provides insight into the ways coaches approach and embody: transformational coaching, mutual investment and authenticity, holding accountability, humility and openness, and positive communication with players. The third subsection, Relationships with Parents and Caregivers, covers common challenges and helpful strategies toward collaborating with other invested adults in players’ lives. The final subsection, Relationships with the System, analyzes the extent to which coaches are negatively impacted by the systems in which they work and the fears these men had of being the last of a dying breed.
