“More is different” has become a slogan for proponents of emergence and the idea is central to the way many condensed matter physicists think about their discipline. This chapter argues that it fails as a definition of emergence because it applies to any composite system. More is always different. Understanding how parts interact to produce the behaviour of wholes has always been at the heart of physics.
