Chinese Non-English Major Pre-service Teachers’ Changing Perspectives on EFL Through Their International Intercultural Learning in Canada

This chapter focuses on the international, intercultural learning experiences of four Chinese pre-service teachers who, as non-English majors, participated in the Teacher Education Reciprocal Learning Program (RLP) and spent three months in Canada. Mirroring the experience of Canadian pre-service teachers’ visit to China in Chap. 7 , this chapter explores how these Chinese pre-service teachers learned English before, during, and after their international internship in Canada. Reflective narratives from Chinese pre-service teachers majoring in mathematics, fine art, geography, and political science shed light on their evolving views of English language learning during their time in Canada. Despite encountering challenges, the participants’ experiences led to positive intercultural learning outcomes, including a newfound appreciation of bilingual and bicultural education in terms of English as a cultural medium and enhancements in interpersonal skills, English proficiency, and intercultural competence between English and Chinese.
