What Are the Current Challenges of Digital Media Use by Children Under Five?
摘要
Children in today’s world are deeply integrated into digital contexts. This ubiquity of digital media means that young children are now growing up without experiencing a world devoid of these technologies. The term “digital media,” recommended by the American Psychological Association in 2019, encompasses various devices and formats, from smartphones to video games. Current research explores these technologies’ impact on child development, distinguishing between passive and active media use. Despite the novelty of touchscreen technology, traditional media like TV remains significant and is now enhanced with interactive features. Parents play a crucial role in mediating children’s digital media use. Although adherence to guidelines limiting screen time for young children is low, early exposure to digital media is becoming more and more common. The complexity of digital media’s influence on child development necessitates a nuanced approach considering potential harms and benefits. Studies indicate that while co-viewing media with children may not delay development, unsupervised use can be detrimental, often due to parental overload. A balanced perspective on digital media’s role in childhood, acknowledging both risks and benefits, is essential for informed guidelines and parental practices.
