Gender Stereotypes in Historical Video Games: An Analysis of Call of Duty and Its Educational Implications from a Transdisciplinary Perspective
摘要
The male gender stereotypes reproduced in historical video games interfere with and are related to the collective memory and beliefs of students, perpetuating a traditional normative masculinity based on violence, war, sex, and power. This research aims to analyze the roles of male characters reproduced in one of the most influential conventional shooting ‘historical video games’ today: Call of Duty. Given the educational need to examine male gender stereotypes in audiovisual narratives and iconographic representations projected by historical content video games, a qualitative content analysis was conducted within a non-experimental cross-sectional documentary-descriptive research design of these representations. According to the results obtained, it remains necessary to deconstruct hegemonic and biased historical narratives, promoting the inclusion of egalitarian masculinities and other counter-hegemonic and non-normative realities regarding the construction of plural gender identities from a transdisciplinary educational approach.
