Exploring Language and Communication: Factors Impeding Retirement Migrants Access to Social Services

  • Virginia Páez-Izquierdo

摘要

This chapter explores the role of language in the experiences of international retirement migrants in Spain. While many retirees struggle to communicate in a foreign language, they employ personal strategies to maintain active lifestyles. However, language barriers hinder access to Spanish public social services, with cultural factors and information gaps also playing a role. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of retirees’ linguistic practices, the challenges they face, and decision-making processes when engaging with social care provision. It also examines the role of social services in addressing linguistic issues, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on narratives from retired migrants and social workers, the chapter assesses whether language acts as a barrier and identifies key considerations for improving access to and relationships with social services in Spain.
