Three-Dimensional Printing in Dermatology

This chapter will discuss skin tissue engineeringSkin tissue engineering using 3D printing and its implications for the future of dermatology, particularly for wound careWound care. The use of three-dimensional (3D) printing comes from the modernization of moulages, a nineteenth century hot wax used for the representation of life-like dermatologic and venerologic conditions. The technological design of this topic consists of skin tissue engineering, which is accomplished using computer- controlled cell deposition into precise 3D geometrical pattern (Tarassoli et al. in J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg 71:615–623, 2018 [1]). The principles of 3D printing have shown favorable in delivery of cells for the replication of skin anisotropy. Additionally, this chapter will discuss the current modalities of use and the case studies that pertain to 3D printing. Other aspects that will also be discussed are the benefits and the current limitations in 3D printing and its future directions.
