Global Dermatology and Telehealth

The global burden of skin disease is often compounded by the lack of access to dermatology expertise, particularly in low-resource settings. The most significant gap in access to dermatologic care exists in low and middle income countries. With recent advancements in telecommunications, teledermatologyTeledermatology is a potential tool that may assist in narrowing these gaps. Although several methods of teledermatologyTeledermatology exist, understanding the technological requirements and limitations of the participating site will allow for selection of the best suited modality. Recognizing the benefits and risks of implementing these modalities, as well as the challenges experienced when scaling teledermatologyTeledermatology to a sustainable practice, is imperative in ensuring high quality, equitable and efficient care. In this chapter, we explore the advancements of telemedicineTelemedicine globally, focusing on low-resource settings, in the field of dermatology.
