Analysis of variance and regression analysis are both branches of linear model theory. Regression analysis and linear model theory are usually taught using matrices. It is less common to teach analysis of variance with matrices. Although standard log-linear model theory is analogous to analysis of variance, the basic results of log-linear model theory are more easily stated in matrix notation. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basics of using matrices.
