A Hierarchy of Power

  • Gianluigi Guido

摘要

A Godfather firm’s organization mirrors the hierarchy of the Sicilian “Cosa Nostra” to ensure goal achievement. The core unit is the family (“famiglia”), built on absolute bonds. Its hierarchy is led by the family head, who approves affiliations and decides on favors. Underbosses manage operations and help evaluate favor requests. Caporegimes act as intermediaries and inspectors, while counselors provide trusted advice. The base of the pyramid includes soldiers (i.e., prosumers) and associates, committed to fulfilling favors. Multiple families form a district, overseen by a Commission. In Godfather Marketing, a firm controls a consumer market, spatially, economically, and socially defined, asserting authority to ensure efficient operations. This structure relies on receptivity to customers’ insecurity and hopes, as well as on collective adaptability through outsourcing and networking. The balance of formal hierarchy and informal network builds members’ attachment.
