In this chapter the argument goes in two directions. First is from film to science, believing that film images are a reliable source of scientific knowledge. I also ask whether movies — film images together with their embedding narratives — are able to tell us about what experiences are like. I say there is not much reason to believe that they do. In the other direction, I consider the contribution of science as an aid to narrative construction in film. I argue that fidelity to science is not a requirement for a movie to belong to the science fiction genre, though it is something like a virtue for works in that genre. What is essential to works of the genre, I argue, is that it invites the audience to take a certain kind of imaginative stance towards the movie; to imagine that it is scientifically credible.
