The State of Kuwait (Fig. 7.1) is located along the northern edge of eastern Arabia, and is one of the smallest countries in Asia. Its landscape is mostly flat, broken by low sand dunes and shallow depressions. As expected of a water-deficit area, its amphibian fauna is depauperate, comprising a single species, the bufonid, Bufotes sitibundus, found in wetlands such as ‘wadis’. While currently known from 12 localities in the country, distributional modelling suggested a wider distribution than currently known. It is known to breed in wetland areas created by the effluent from Al-Jahra town, where stagnant, shallow pools are formed, as well as in agricultural areas. The species being unassessed for conservation status, a NE (Not Evaluated) category is appropriate. Kuwait’s biodiversity policies include a number of recommendations for conservation, from awareness of resources to the development of skills and expertise in research, habitat protection, and population monitoring and protection..
