The Sultanate of Oman lies at the south-eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula and has land borders with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Despite the diversity of habitats, the arid nature of the landscapes is not conducive to supporting a diverse amphibian fauna, and indeed, the native amphibian fauna consists of just two species of toads (family Bufonidae). These are the Arabian Toad (Sclerophrys arabica) and Dhofar Toad (Duttaphrynus dhufarensis). The Arabian Toad is restricted to northern Oman and is rarely found far from water. The Dhofar Toad is found in suitable habitats throughout Oman and is highly adapted to arid conditions. It may be found far from permanent water. Reduced availability of water through changes in agricultural practices and climate are a threat to these toads, as is the potential introduction of the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.
