Media capture by the state has steadily advanced in Brazil over time and employs a number of different political strategies. The system that regulates the media still bears the marks of the country’s two dictatorial periods in the twentieth century: the dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas and his Estado Novo regime (1937–1945) and the military dictatorship (1964–1985). Both state intervention in the media (1939) and national security laws and restrictions placed on the freedoms of expression of thought and information (1967) created similar forms of censorship to keep the media under control.
