As a crucial pillar of society, the media can play a vital role in unmasking abuses of power and calling for accountability. However, when the media is controlled by power and capital, its ability to act as a watchdog is compromised, leading to what is known as media capture. This media capture can occur through various means, including using money to influence the media, restricting independent media’s access to information, and politicians and business owners establishing media organizations to further their interests. This chapter analyzes three key interconnected roles that social accountability actors, such as civil society organizations, play in combating media capture in Ghana’s Fourth Republic: promoting press freedom and independence, facilitating the news media’s investigative work, and legitimizing critical journalism.
