Forensic science is a broad science with many subfields including psychology, psychiatry, criminalistics, jurisprudence, behavioral science, odontology, and pathology/biology; mortuaries and DNA laboratories constitute a major part of the work load. Autopsies, if done manually, are very time consuming and labor intensive and sometimes met with resistance by emotional next of kin. Over the years, as in almost all other fields of work, automation and robotics have ventured into the discipline of forensic science and have helped overcome the shortcomings of manual procedures. This article reviews the utility of robotics in biopsy procedures and DNA laboratories and Virto bot system for surface documentation and virtual autopsies.
