Secure and Trustworthy Healthcare for the Elderly with Blockchain-Enabled Pervasive Systems

Octogenarians are a group of people whose age is above 80. Elderly people have increasingly demanding healthcare needs as their medical requirements change as they age. They are more likely to have chronic, noncommunicable diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which require ongoing monitoring and medical care. In other words, elderly people need more healthcare to manage their chronic diseases and live comfortably as they age. Octogenarians may have difficulty traveling to the hospital for regular health checkups due to mobility issues, transportation problems, cognitive impairment, fear of doctors or hospitals, or lack of social support. Telehealth, home health care, transportation assistance, and social support can help octogenarians get the healthcare they need, even if they cannot travel to the hospital. The objective of this paper is to provide a technology-based replica of medical support which should be both simple and trustworthy. In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, a conceptual framework is presented in this paper, and the methodology used is: (1) Elderly data collection must be categorized according to day-to-day activities and sensor data, (2) Smart contracts must be used, and informed consent on which information must be shared with whom in order to increase trust in seniors, and (3) securely store the collected data using available secure cloud architectures. To learn about the implementation challenges and insights, the suggested system is simulated. A home setup is taken into consideration with a collection of sensors to gather passive data about elders’ activities, storing it securely with access control and confidentiality concerns, identifying anomalies in the data and presenting them to the healthcare provider for intervention, and securely storing the data in global storage. The simulation’s findings and performance indicators are encouraging for further exploration in this study. The proposed system is simulated to understand the insights and hurdles in the implementation.
