Investigation of Heat Exchanger Effectiveness Using a Solar Water Heater

Water heating has many applications in the current scenario. However, this process consumes a lot of power. Solar water heaters (SWHs) are the most promising solution for this. The effective application of an SWH system is dependent upon the heat exchanger (HE) system used in the SWH and the final load. Heat exchangers can be majorly classified based on the direction of flow from hot and cold sources, namely, parallel-flow or counterflow. In this work, the application of an SWH is tested with both these types of heat exchangers. The effectiveness value of the counterflow heat exchanging system was found to be 11% higher than the parallel-flow system. The amount of heat transfer of the counterflow system was also 4.3% higher per second than the parallel-flow system.
