Planning and Goal Setting

The successful introduction of AI into radiology practice is not only about technological innovation. It is a fundamental change in radiology practice and needs management and orchestration of the changes that this integration will cause. Sustainable change requires a clear vision including strategic goal setting and meticulous planning. It requires a departure from linear thinking and embracing a systems thinking. The first step in this transformation is to recognise the need for change, which should be assessed in a methodological way, thus allowing stakeholders to establish a rationale for change that is consistent with the goals of both clinicians and patients. Focused goals for the introduction of AI must be set. These goals need to be specific, measurable, relevant, achievable and aligned with the broader goals of the radiology department. Defining the scope of changes provides a clear view of the changes and milestones to be achieved and ensures that the process of integrating AI into radiology is focused and targeted. Defining desired outcomes provides a guiding principle for the AI integration and ensures that changes are aligned with the goals. Feedback is critical for iterative improvement during the transformative process—it reflects ongoing efforts, highlights blind spots, and suggests ways to improve. While the power of AI lies in its algorithms and predictions, its success in the real world is strongly dependent on the user experience, thus a user-centred approach supports a smooth integration of AI into radiology. Resource allocation is essential for the success of transformation projects. Ensuring that adequate resources (financial, time, manpower, technical infrastructure, and training) are allocated in a timely manner can have a significant impact on the success of AI integration into radiology. Inevitably, there are risks associated with the integration of AI into radiology. Recognising these risks and planning accordingly are essential for the success of the implementation.
