We present a “mathematical critics” model to understand Grothendieck’s work in a unitary perspective, blending history (intuitionistic Kripke models), phenomenology (Sheaves), and metaphysics (Toposes). Six periods (Functional Analysis, 1949–1953; Homological Algebra, 1955–1957; Algebraic Geometry, 1958–1964; Arithmetic Geometry, 1964–1968; Topological Algebra and Mathematical Philosophy, 1981–1986; Universal Algebra and World View, 1983–1991) become connected through some fundamental pendulum dialectics: projections-injections, foldings-unfoldings, and archetypes-types. This helps to explain Grothendieck’s unifying concepts and techniques, through their universal, soft, and natural characteristics.
