Dignity

Through an interrogation of the false narratives of the digital capitalist age, this chapter refutes technocratic efforts to relegate privacy to the pre-digital era. Exploring the interconnections between user-generated content, denigrating videos about children, facial recognition technologies, and “synthetic media” such as voice cloning and deepfake CSAM, the chapter identifies that digital intrusions on children’s right to privacy are also intrusions on their right to human dignity. Assessing the depth and scope of the digital intrusion on children’s rights to freedom of thought, expression, and movement as an assault on children’s decisional autonomy, this chapter calls for a renewed commitment to equal human dignity to forestall new frontiers in the technology-enabled assault on children’s rights.
