Introduction

With the release of ChatGPT, in 2022, the velocity of recent developments in generative artificial intelligence (AI) reached public consciousness. The exceptional pace gathered in the AI arms race serves as a wake-up call—signalling the urgency of a clear-eyed reckoning with the technologies and technocrats that shape our lives and impose specific human rights harms for children. The rapid development and diffusion of advanced technologies have impacted profoundly on all areas of human activity, including on crime and crime control efforts. This chapter provides an overview of the implications that these technologies bear on children’s rights, with a summary of the scope of the chapters that follow.
