摘要

The chapter explores marine genetic resources (MGRs) as the backbone of a prosperous blue economy requiring global coordination in governance and sustainable practices. MGRs that are comprised of genetic materials from various marine species represent a rich source of biotechnological innovations, drug discoveries, and ecological sustainability. The chapter opens by characterizing MGRs and identifying their economic importance, depicting a wide range of applications in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and environmental remediation. This discussion addresses the topics that surround the abuse and exploitation of MGRs from the ethical and legal perspectives, such as biopiracy, benefit sharing, and regulatory frameworks. Another important thematic of contemporary chapter is the increasing phenomena of MGR, which examines the most typical hindrances and problems on the way to the sustainable development. International collaboration, capacity development, and responsible governance of MGRs, especially with the attention on benefit sharing, protection, and community engagement, are discussed, highlighting their significance. The chapter thus emphasizes that apart from the dual role of MGRs as places of livelihood and biodiversity, there is need for the stakeholders in their collective discussions to mull over the sustainable plans for full glorification of the role of MGRs for the success of the blue economy and beyond.
