Blue Carbon: Roles in Climate Change and Energy Generation, and Effects on Coastal Communities

Blue carbon ecosystems, which include mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes, play an essential role in mitigating climate change and energy generation, and promote the well-being of coastal communities. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the intricate relationships among blue carbon, climate change, renewable energy, and the resilience of coastal areas. By utilizing the photosynthetic processes of their plants, blue carbon ecosystems are able to effectively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in sediment layers, which is a highly efficient process. Their capacity to store carbon is comparable to that of forests found on land, making them an essential component of global efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. In addition, the deterioration and loss of these ecosystems are significant contributors to carbon emissions, exacerbating climate change’s effects. It has tremendous potential for the generation of renewable energy. Mangroves, for example, present opportunities for the production of energy based on biomass, with the abundant organic matter they contain being utilized for the production of biofuels. It is possible to harness tidal energy in coastal areas that have tidal solid currents, which would provide sources of electricity that are both clean and reliable. The incorporation of blue carbon into strategies for renewable energy results in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promotes sustainable development in coastal areas. The conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems significantly affect coastal communities. These ecosystems serve as natural barriers that protect human settlements and infrastructure from the effects of coastal erosion, storm surges, and rising sea levels. Additionally, they provide livelihoods for coastal populations, support vital fisheries, and offer recreational and cultural amenities to those living there. Nevertheless, the deterioration of blue carbon habitats threatens coastal communities’ resilience and adaptive capacity, thereby exacerbating their susceptibility to the effects of climate change. Blue carbon ecosystems are vital for mitigating the effects of climate change, diversifying renewable energy sources, and protecting the adaptability of coastal communities. It is of utmost importance to make efforts to preserve and restore these ecosystems, which calls for multidisciplinary approaches that incorporate climate science, energy policy, and community involvement. We can lay the groundwork for a more resilient and environmentally sustainable future by recognizing the interdependence of blue carbon with efforts to mitigate climate change, ensure energy stability, and promote the sustainability of coastal areas.
