Possible Methods of Suppressing Mycotoxin in Aquatic Organisms Feed

Mycotoxin is known to be one of the significant threats to the health of both animals and humans because of the increase of its occurrence in the feeds and foods. Mycotoxin in aquatic organisms feed is a problem of concern in which farmers need to take deliberate steps in overcoming this feed toxin challenge. The effects result in teratogenic, carcinogenic, estrogenic or immune-suppressive effects, poor growth, low apparent digestibility, physiological disorders, histological change, and death in the consumer. It is an unavoidable challenge that quick actions need to be put in place for its control or suppression. There have been many methods that prove to be effective in controlling or suppressing feed contamination by mycotoxins. These methods include different strategies such as methods of planting the crops, preharvest, harvesting, and postharvest. Physical treatments (processing, sorting, storage, and radiation) also have effects on the quantity of mycotoxins in the feed as well as chemical (bases, chitosan, and ozone treatments) and biological (bacteria, fungi, yeast, and fermentation) control. This review identifies and looks at novel detoxification strategies that can be explored by aquatic nutritionists to suppress and monitor the increase in the level of mycotoxins for the safety of the consumers. Limiting the amount of fungi and mycotoxin in our aquatic feed, good agricultural practices, good harvesting and storage practices, appropriate farming techniques, resistance variety planting, and the implementation of novel strategies can be recommended.
