Restricted Narratives: Journalism in the Face of Wartime Censorship

  • Rashad Mammadov

摘要

Responsibility, risk, and making ethical decisions are all part of the job description for journalists covering the conflict in Ukraine. Concerns about personal safety and the nation’s security have prompted journalists to alter their methods in response to the war. Ukrainian journalists have had to strike a balance between covering the news accurately and truthfully without jeopardizing military operations or putting lives in danger. Operational restrictions, like curfews and limits on photographing military movements or sites of previous strikes, are just one of many hurdles they face. Another, more nuanced difficulty is reporting properly without unintentionally helping enemy forces. For news organizations, finding the balance typically means engaging in self-censorship or implementing internal screening procedures.
