The Devising Process

In this chapter, I focus on the devising process and how to apply select research material directly into the development of a performance. Using my TDVY performance Color Play (2018) as a case study, I detail my personal artistic practice of moment-building which involves rapid material selection and non-linear construction. I offer three different ways to create performative material: direct interpretation of material, inspired interpretation of material, and theme-based interpretation of material. I also offer creative approaches to crafting transitions, building the pre-show and post-show experience, and collaborating with live musicians.
