An Introduction to Theatre and Dance for the Very Young

In this chapter, I share framing definitions for Theatre and Dance for the Very Young (TDVY) and articulate trends and forms within the field, including logistics, aesthetics, dramaturgy, the role of the audience, and design strategies for interactivity. I highlight aspects of the field’s history, noting the ways in which ideology, policy, and funding impact growth, and examine contemporary developments. I also discuss necessary considerations for an ethical practice before sharing a glimpse at what the rest of this book offers.
