Trend and Issues in the Training of Secondary School Mathematics Teachers in Tanzania: The Relevance of Advanced Mathematics Courses for Teacher Trainees
摘要
This chapter is divided into two main parts. In the first part, we present the principles underlying the education of secondary mathematics teachers in Tanzania and the structure of their training programmes; a literature review of national and regional literature leads us to identify issues related to this training. In the second part, we address one of these issues: the significant weight assigned to advanced university mathematics courses in the training of secondary mathematics teachers. Through an analysis of the school curriculum, as well as questionnaires and focus groups with teachers, we identify a mismatch between the content of advanced courses and the mathematics content that the prospective teachers are expected to teach in secondary schools.
