Effective Warehouse Space and Layout Management: A Case Study of DHL Express

Warehouses are critical components of a manageable business in operation flow and inventory management. This study examined the courier company’s perspective on warehouse management and applying their space utilization. Therefore, warehouse planners must deal with certain characteristics that constrain the available surface area. Warehouse space utilization is critical for sustaining a smooth operating flow. This research concentrated on the space utilization and arrangement of warehouse space at DHL Express Service Point Glenmarie in Shah Alam, Selangor. The issue that frequently occurs in the warehouses is inefficient operation flows due to the space and layout. Each space in the warehouse should be meticulously planned, considering the warehouse’s size and location. DHL Express Service Point Glenmarie is known for courier services, and the parcels or commodities will remain at the warehouse indefinitely and may be in excess. This results in insufficient space, resulting in a packed warehouse and lacking utilizing places. This study ascertains how the corporation utilizes space and warehouses to avoid the scenarios above. There are two primary objectives to accomplish. The first objective is to identify the effectiveness of the DHL Express Service Point space and layout in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor, in terms of parcels or commodities management. The second objective is to examine the suitable warehouse layout for DHL Express Service Point operation in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor. In this case of DHL Express Service, the suitable type of warehouse has been identified is the I-shaped layout. This suitable design is based on the operation optimization of DHL warehouse, budget consideration, space availability, equipment, and operation flow.
