Clinical Biomechanics for Implant Prosthodontics

摘要

The number of patients requiring implant-supported restorations has increased considerably in the last two decades. Patients are living longer, and restorations are required to last a considerable length of time. To ensure longevity and a successful outcome, the practitioner should have a sound understanding of implant biomechanics and the design of an occlusal scheme. Biomechanics is the application of engineering mechanics to aid in the solution of biological problems, and it has two basic principles: Teeth and implants are completely different entities. Teeth are anchored to the bone by the periodontal ligament, which gives it slight mobility in health. Implants, however, are analogous to ankylosed teeth, with negligible mobility after successful osseointegration. It follows that there are differences to consider when planning for restorations supported by teeth vs. those supported by implants. When treatment planning being done for complex care for a patient, multiple factors must be considered which include but are not limited to: In order to ensure the long-term viability of implants and implant-supported restorations, biomechanics must be taken into account. This chapter highlights the pertinent points related to implant biomechanics and treatment planning.
