COVID-19 Pandemic

A new deadly coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has swept the world in the twenty-first century, causing COVID-19, a highly infectious respiratory disease that is not transmitted by blood or blood components. Some people have a severe infection, leading to hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, or death. Scientists and other experts from different fields fought every day against a new global threat from which no one was safe. Since the first confirmed infections in 2019, several millions of people have died. Countries around the world have put in place a number of measures to ensure uninterrupted blood donation and to protect the health of blood donors. In the relentless global fight against COVID-19, in addition to vaccine production, experts have launched a program to collect plasma from COVID-19 patients. There are currently two methods in use worldwide to combat COVID-19 that include plasma. The first is called convalescent plasma; patients whose immune systems are weakened and unable to produce their own antibodies are given transfusions of this antibody-rich plasma in the hopes that it will help them recover. The second method is the transfusion of hyperimmune immunoglobulin, which is more concentrated and therefore includes more antibodies. There are also some antiviral medicines available on the market. COVID-19 calmed down, but the danger still remains.
