Empathy and Trust as Different Foundations of Ethics

The paper analyses various forms of relationship to the other as possible foundations of ethics. While empathy results thereby still affected by some kind of symmetrical thinking that reduces the originality of the other, following the distinction between trust and reliability, the experience of trust offers the possibility to fully embrace the invisible nature of the other’s givenness.
