Masculinity and Powerlessness in Bangladeshi-Canadian Youth

  • Mustahid Husain

摘要

This chapter explores the concepts of masculinity among Bangladeshi-Canadian youth, employing an intersectional perspective to understand their subjective experiences. The findings reveal three main themes: having breadwinner status and honour, upholding Canadian values and participating in Canadian society, and maintaining Bangladeshi cultures. The participants navigate a unique, refined cultural version of masculinity that intersects inclusive and hybrid masculinities, balancing Canadian values and norms with Bangladeshi traditions. Parental expectations, cultural identity, and the challenges of integration emerge as crucial factors shaping their masculine trajectories. The study highlights the dynamic and evolving nature of masculinity for this demographic, influenced by diverse socio-cultural contexts.
