Robotic technology depends on surgeons’ knowledge, skills, and inputs combined with the technology platform to achieve successful outcomes. Initial planning includes a meticulous attention to details surrounding the diagnosis and planned surgery. Prior to proceeding with surgery with robotic technology, intrinsic knowledge of the specific product to be used is essential as trouble shooting and workflow adjustments may be required for a successful outcome. The type of robotic registration chosen determines the flow of surgical steps and is critical for accuracy. A fundamental understanding of the registration process is paramount for the surgical team. After registration, it is vitally important that there is no movement of the anatomy to ensure accuracy. Three emerging developments are on the horizon regarding the planning efforts for robotically assisted spinal surgery. These include intraoperative long scan capabilities, lower radiation techniques for anatomy acquisition imaging, and segmental registration techniques.
