Robotic Navigation: Applications Beyond Instrumentation

Robot-assisted spine surgery was primarily developed for the safety and accuracy of pedicle screw instrumentation. However, the coupling of robotic assistance with three-dimensional navigation has made novel applications of robotic assistance possible, including transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, anterior lumbar interbody fusion, minimally invasive decompression, and vertebral augmentation. While still in their infancy, robotic assistance for these applications can increase accuracy, safety, cost, workflow, and clinical outcomes. Robotic assistance and navigation in spine surgery are promising technologies with numerous potential outcomes beyond instrumentation that can enhance the field of spine surgery and improve patient care.
