Measuring Student Learning

This chapter outlines the three quantitative methods I used for measuring student learning of both geology content and NOS understandings: click-on diagrams (CODs) (LaDue & Shipley, 2018), the Geoscience Concept Inventory (GCI; Libarkin et al., 2011), and the Views on Science–Technology–Society (VOSTS; Aikenhead & Ryan, 1992). The first two instruments measured student learning within the domain of geology, and the VOSTS measured student understandings about science. I had two aims with this evaluation:
