From Flexible Manufacturing Systems to Evolvable Production Systems: Review and Implementation

This article provides an overview of the evolution of manufacturing paradigms from craft manufacturing to personalization, as well as the evolution of manufacturing systems from flexible manufacturing systems to evolvable manufacturing systems by the emergence of Industry 4.0 technologies. The use of ontology and Semantic Web as tools of Industry 4.0 is then discussed and experimentally implemented in the case of ENSAM manufacturing cell laboratory. It will examine the ways in which ontology can be used to facilitate communication and collaboration between different systems, and to enable the creation of more intelligent and autonomous manufacturing processes which allows the implement of plug and produce systems.
