Unraveling the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Idea Generation: A Systematic Literature Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) breakthroughs have revolutionized various fields. It is altering the ways businesses generate ideas by improving human creativity and problem-solving capabilities. This paper carries out an extensive literature review to explore the current state of the art of the most relevant trends addressing how artificial intelligence supports idea generation. The findings are split into two sections. The descriptive analysis section examines the evolution of AI-driven idea-generation research, the geographical distribution of research, key authors who have made significant contributions to the field, the top journals and conferences that publish in the issue, and the various research approaches used in the field. Furthermore, this review uses VOSviewer to map the keywords retrieved from the selected papers, revealing the interconnection and relationships between various research topics. The content analysis section, on the other hand, aims to provide a thorough comprehension of the literature. We identified three central themes: the role of semantic networks in AI-driven idea generation, the potential of AI in improving group discussions and brainstorming sessions, and the role of AI-based tools in idea generation (e.g. generative AI).
