This chapter offers a range of generalisations from the study conducted in the preceding part of the book. It introduces the notions of Substitution Sets as a way of ordering the seemingly unpatterned scribal abbreviating practices and brings together the textual, visual and spatial aspects of meanings of abbreviation forms, highlighting the need for a wholesale reconsideration of the ways in which we conceive of abbreviation symbols and their roles in vernacular textualities of early English. Lastly, the chapter suggests a connection between abbreviation as a facet of medieval textuality and modern digital multimodality, which is likewise dependent on the co-occurrence of a range of modes for the creation of meaning.
